What if the vietnamese assisted the soviets in afghanistan instead of pissing off the chinese

Recommended Posts

this is the one thing that gives me no rest is the fact that the when the soviets went into afghanistan they had a priceless advantage which was the vietnamese and they chose not to utilize it to full effect. you might wonder why is that a priceless advantage is because they were an army who had full intricate knowledge in guerilla warfare something that might have help the soviets in dealing with the mujaheddin and their tactics. vietnam and afghanistan may be different terrain but the tactics used by both guerilla armies remains mostly the same or similar (eg. ambushes/hit and run, tunnel networks, blending into the civilian population, civilian spies and booby traps) since the soviets supplied the vietnamese to defeat us americans i would have hope when they went into afghanistan they would have some understanding of guerilla warfare from their guerilla comrades if you get what i am trying to say.

Jungle warfare different than desert/mountain area. Russia always had used guerilla tactics in their world wide revolutions. Don't think they needed the Vietnamese to teach them anything. They got stuck in Afghanistan like WE did in Vietnam. The idea that overwhelming power can overcome a determined nation of fighters never works well.  Their arrogance of military power caused them to lose. They invaded because they thought President Carter weak and ineffective.

But your points make sense. The Russians never used their abilities to their advantage.

looking at the current situation now i think it would be better off if the Russians "won" in Afghanistan. maybe Al Qaeda and other religious cult crazies would not exist or that the "terrorism stuff" would be redirected towards the Russians instead of us.

The US won the Vietnam War and managed to get a peace treaty signed with the North Vietnamese leader in 1973. The US then removed the vast majority of American troops from Vietnam. Nixon then shortly after had his Watergate scandal and suddenly the peace treaty was treated as null and void and the North Vietnamese started fighting again. The American people absolutely refused let the government send troops back to Vietnam to retake it, and thus it was viewed as a loss.

The US won the Vietnam War in 1973. Then shady politics smeared mud all over the victory. At least during the war the US Military managed to form the United States Navy SEALs, develop our snipers and special forces schools and doctrines, got to clean out a bunch of old WW2 gear, and managed to develop and refine new weapons and tactics which has served our nation well in every conflict ever since. Also, the Soviet Union went bankrupt funding the North Vietnamese fight against the US. All in all, it was by far mostly battles won,  valuable lessons learned, and a grand scale global strategic victory that too few people understand.
